Search engine marketing (SEM) means marketing your site so that customers can find you when they use the internet. It can be a combination of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay Per Click (PPC), and Pay Per Impression ads.
SEO involves optimizing your site both on page and off so that search engines will rank you higher. Customers place a high value of trust on search results that show up organically, meaning the search engine places them there because it thinks they are the most relevent, not because the site paid for a placement.
That does not mean that SEO is always better than Pay Per Click ads. Pay Per Click ads get you on the first page of search results immediately, and you only pay when a customer clicks on your ad. A well-written and positioned ad that takes the customer to a relevant landing page can give you an excellent return on investment (ROI). SEO takes time and committment (and money) to get you on the first page organically and to also keep you there.
